Program Length
Program length depends on placement and progression.
A placement test is given to each new student before they begin their course of study to evaluate the appropriate level of instruction. The length of instruction depends on the results of the placement exam.

In order to provide students and all stake holders with a clear interpretation of the grading scale above, the following achievement scales were created for ENGL 097 and ENGL 098. The achievement scales clearly indicate the degree to which students have attained the student learning outcomes by skill area at the end of Levels 1 & 2.
ENGL 097 & ENGL 098 Achievement Scale
ENGL 098 – Level 2 Intermediate Students who pass with 70% or above should be able to demonstrate the following:
Reading and Vocabulary | Students will demonstrate comprehension of intermediate level multi-paragraph written texts by identifying and inferring the purpose, main ideas, and important details of a text. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic intermediate vocabulary by placing it accurately in context. |
Listening and Vocabulary | Students will demonstrate comprehension of intermediate level passages (lectures, discussions, debates, and interviews) by identifying and inferring the topic, purpose, main ideas, and important details. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic intermediate level vocabulary by placing it accurately in context. |
Writing and Grammar | Students will respond to a prompt appropriately by producing a coherent informative & persuasive academic paragraph. Students will adequately support their ideas by integrating their experiences, observations, and opinions as well as recommending and/or predicting a relevant course of action. They will produce a range of simple and complex language with reasonable accuracy as well as the use of common connectors and transitions. |
Speaking | Students will demonstrate presentation skills and spoken fluency by planning and delivering a timed, persuasive, academic presentation of 5-7 minutes using platform and organizational skills. Students will also produce relevant and coherent responses to on-demand interactive topic discussions on general and limited abstract topics with peers and instructors in an academic setting. They will ask relevant follow up questions and produce language to ask for clarifications, agree, disagree, take turns, interrupt politely, and offer predictions and recommendations towards a course of action. |

ENGL 097 & ENGL 098 Level Progression
Progression from ENGL 097 to ENGL 098 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is achieved by completing all requirements, with a fixed score of 70% or above.
Progression from ENGL 098 to ENGL 100 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is achieved by completing all requirements, with a fixed score of 70% or above.
