ENGL 097 - English as a Second Language Level 1
This course focuses on introducing and developing listening, speaking, reading and sentence structure skills necessary for success in GUST undergraduate courses. Utilizing the lecture method, pair work, group activities, and student-instructor conferences, the student will engage with academically-oriented texts, lectures, and other materials to extend reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.
KITE® post-test required. Credit earned cannot be used for graduation.
ENGL 098 - English as a Second Language Level 2
This course focuses on refining listening, speaking reading and paragraph writing skills necessary for success in GUST undergraduate courses. Utilizing the lecture method, pair work, group activities, and student-instructor conferences, the student will engage with academically-oriented texts, lectures, and other materials to extend reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.
The student will analyze, summarize, paraphrase, and synthesize information taken from a variety of sources to plan and deliver a formal presentation of 5-7 minutes with visual aids and engage in paired interactive topic discussions. Under the close supervision of the instructor and using the workshop method, the student will follow a process based approach to plan, revise, and edit informative and persuasive paragraphs.

Successful completion of this course will prepare students for entry into English 100.
