Recognition of Labor Rights and Freedom of Association

Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) upholds and protects the labour rights of all its employees in accordance with both Kuwait Labour Law and international best practices, in full alignment with SDG 8.2.9: Employment Practice Labour Rights. The University recognizes that safeguarding these rights is fundamental to promoting decent work, fair treatment, and inclusive participation across all employment levels.

Freedom of Association and Collective Representation

GUST fully respects the freedom of association, allowing all employees—academic, administrative, and support staff—to express their views, form representative bodies, and participate in collective dialogue on workplace matters. This principle is embodied in the Faculty Senate Charter and Bylaws, which serve as a structured mechanism for collective representation. Through the Senate, faculty members can raise concerns, propose policies, and collaborate with university leadership to enhance working conditions and academic quality.

The Faculty Senate Committee operates transparently, with elected representatives from every academic department, ensuring that both women and international faculty have an equal voice in governance and decision-making. This inclusive approach reinforces GUST’s commitment to ensuring that all employees, regardless of nationality, gender, or role, are heard and represented.

Commitment to Labour Rights and Fair Employment

Beyond academic governance, GUST’s employment policies—including the Code of Conduct and Equal Employment Opportunity Policy—protect the rights of all workers to fair treatment, equitable pay, and a safe, respectful workplace. The University strictly prohibits discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, ensuring that all staff can exercise their rights freely and without fear of disadvantage.

Through these measures, GUST demonstrates its ongoing dedication to upholding labour rights, encouraging dialogue, and promoting collective participation, ensuring a just and inclusive environment for all employees—local and international—consistent with the principles of SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
