Arnaud Lacheret: Woman is the Future of the Gulf

GSC Talk Series

Woman is the future of the Gulf: What Arabian modernity tells us

“Woman is the future of the Gulf” is the result of a long-range study based on recorded interviews with young female managers from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The study aims to address the concept of modernization in the Arabian Gulf.

The set of cultural, religious, and social values extant in those countries produced an original approach towards social change. By giving new rights to women, Gulf Governments have launched an impetus in their societies that is feelable inside Arabian families. Daughters and wives can now negotiate with family members (most of times males) advantages like the permission to study and then to work. Once this most symbolic step is accomplished, they introduce new values that they have acquired in their companies into their households; they thus initiate social change starting with the basic cell of society: the family.

The critical point is reached when the father becomes proud of his daughter and changes from an attitude of reluctance to the championing of women empowerment. This is the definition of a social non-movement: when a set of actors adopt the same behavior without any concertation. The “empowered” daughters and wives become micro models for the rest of the family, for friends and neighborhood thus creating a kind of a virtuous circle. This appears to be a most acceptable way to run social change into Gulf societies.

Dr. Arnaud Lacheret is director of the French-Arabian Business School of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Fatima Al-Hashem, Assistant Professor of English at GUST.

GUST organizes first Kuwait participation in World Yoga Day

GUST and Yoga Gives organized the first-ever Kuwait participation in World Yoga Day 2014 with over 17 people in attendance to support Oxfam Deutschland’s humanitarian response for Syrian refugees.

Every year on World Yoga Day (WYD), yoga teachers and schools around the world donate their time and space to a two hour yoga session devoted to human rights. The session is held from 11am- 1pm, local time in each time zone, which leads to a 24-hour yoga marathon around the world. Bringing people worldwide together to devote their practice to this important cause is a wonderful, spirited celebration of yoga. The aim of WYD is to bring as many nations as possible together on this project, especially countries where human rights violations are a dominant issue.

This year, WYD 2014, dedicated its efforts to support Oxfam’s humanitarian response for Syrian refugees. Millions of people have fled violence in Syria and are in desperate need of shelter, food and water. Oxfam is aiming to reach the 650,000 refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and inside Syria.

In more than 90 countries Oxfam works with partner organizations to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. When disaster strikes, Oxfam saves lives and helps rebuild livelihoods. Through campaigning, they support the poor to influence local and global decisions that affect them.

GUST Professor Wins Award for “Monograph of the Year”

Kuwait City, 20 December 2021: Assistant Professor of English, Dr. Shahd Al Shammari Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) was awarded the 2021 Outstanding Monograph of the Year. The award was presented to her by the International and Intercultural Communication Division (IICD) at the National Communication Association’s (NAC) for her paper titled Microaggressions in Flux: Whiteness, disability, masculinity in Academia which was also co-authored by Kuwait University’s Assistant Professor of Mass Communication, Dr. Haneen Ghabra.

The paper worked to present experiences with intercultural communication across their disciplines, reflecting on academic experiences using the lens of performance studies and autoethnography which is a form of qualitative research in which an author uses self-reflection and writing to explore anecdotal and personal experience and connect this autobiographical story to wider cultural, political, and social meanings and understandings. As an autoethnographic piece, the research localized their experiences both in the West and in Kuwait, reflecting on systems of oppression, injustices, and microaggressions.

The IICD promotes research and teaching in intercultural, international, and intergroup (including interracial/interethnic) communication. The division presents research representing many perspectives and conducted by qualitative, quantitative, and rhetorical methods. The NAC presents this award annually that is selected by a committee which unanimously voted on Dr. Al Shammari’s paper for this year.

Assistant Professor of English, Dr. Shahd Al Shammari said “We are both proud to be recognized internationally and hope to see our work read by scholars and students of various disciplines. Research has to be critical, reflexive, and also accessible. I am happy to have co-authored with Dr. Al-Ghabra in order to foster research practices across universities in Kuwait.”

Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari also recently published an article with GUST alumna Yasmeen Al-Askari titled Exile and the Disabled Body in Randa Jarrar's "The Life, Loves, and Adventures of Zelwa the Halfie" and also is a member of TESOL International Association Kuwait. Dr. Al Shammari’s publications and research are an example of GUST’s dedication to become a hybrid teaching and research institute within the forthcoming years.

GUST Faculty and Alumni Publish Paper in an International Journal

Kuwait City, 12 September 2021: Gulf University for Science and Technology's (GUST) Alumna Yasmeen Al-Askari and Assistant Professor of English Literature at GUST, Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari, co-authored a paper titled Exile and the Disabled Body in Randa Jarrar's "The Life, Loves, and Adventures of Zelwa the Halfie", which has been published in the International Academic Forum: Journal for Arts and Humanities (IAFOR). IAFOR Journal of Arts & Humanities is an internationally reviewed and editorially independent interdisciplinary journal associated with IAFOR's international conferences on the arts and humanities.

The paper dissected the themes of exile, diaspora, disability, identity, and language using Edward Said's work as a platform for their argument and research. Dr. Al-Shammari and Ms. Al-Askari used Said's suggestion of a mind/body split, giving room to consider the sense of self as already in-between, as the exiled 'I' attempts to find a home within a new land and a new body. The authors conclude with how Arabic literature considers notions of exile and disability in various ways and how contemporary Anglophone literature deals with concepts of diaspora and exile, similar to trends in Disability Studies as a field.

Assistant Professor of English Literature, Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari said, "Co-authoring a paper with a GUST alumna has been a great learning experience for me and has offered a great experience in the academic field for Yasmine Al-Askari, one of our top literature graduates from the English Department. I am happy to co-author this paper with her and hope she continues her graduate studies. Furthermore, at GUST, we will continue to show our constant support and celebrate her future achievements as a product of this prestigious institution."
