GUST Global Studies Centre Travel Grant for Research in Kuwait
SUMMARY
The purpose of the GUST Global Studies Centre (GSC) Travel Grant for Research in Kuwait is to support significant Social Sciences and Humanities research in Kuwait for Ph.D candidates and to foster relationships between international Ph.D candidates and GSC faculty. One grant of 1000KWD will be awarded per academic year for a travel stay in Kuwait of a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks. Proposed travel and research funded by the grant must be completed within the academic year for which the grant is awarded. 4 weeks of the recipient’s travel stay in Kuwait must be completed between October 1 and May 15 (the main GUST academic year). Recipients will have access to an office, admin support and the GUST Library. Recipients will be expected to give at least one talk on their research at the GSC and to participate in GSC and GUST events during their stay. Funding from this grant may be used for travel to and from Kuwait, accommodation in Kuwait, and personal and research expenses while in Kuwait.
ELIGIBILTY
- Applicants are required to be a full time enrolled Ph.D candidate at a university outside of Kuwait.
- Applicants must demonstrate the ability to complete the proposed research within 6-12 weeks.

- Detailed research proposal that includes the research question, methodology, timeline of proposed research, expected research output and outcomes and budget for your stay (can be combined with other grants/funds) (no more than 5 pages).
- A confidential letter of support from their Ph.D supervisor explaining where the candidate is in terms of completing their Ph.D and their confidence in the applicant’s ability to complete the research project (to be sent separately).
- A confidential letter of support from a GSC faculty who will supervise and work with the applicant during their stay at GUST and Kuwait (to be sent separately).
SUBMISSION PROCESS
Applications (except letters of support from Ph.D and GUST supervisors) should be submitted as one PDF file to GSCgrants2025@gust.edu.kw Letters of support from Ph.D and GUST supervisors should be sent from their institutional addresses to GSCgrants2025@gust.edu.kw.
Deadline for submissions is May 1. Late submissions may be considered from exceptional candidates.
The grant recipient will be announced once selected and approved usually in June.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The grant applications will be considered and evaluated by a committee of GUST Global Studies Centre members on the basis of:
- The originality of the research.
- The methodological considerations as outlined in the research proposal.
- The feasibility of the research project as outlined in the research proposal.
- The expected outcomes/research outputs as outlined in the research proposal.
- The willingness of the applicant to collaborate and participate in the activities of the Global Studies Centre.
Final selection of the recipient of the GUST Global Studies Centre Travel Grant for Research in Kuwait must be approved by the Chair of the Global Studies Centre, the Director of Graduate Studies and Research and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Recipients of the GUST Global Studies Centre Travel Grant for Research in Kuwait will be expecte
- Work closely with a GSC faculty member
- Be on location in Kuwait for at least four weeks between October 1 and May 15.
- Give at least one research talk at the Global Studies Centre.
- Participate in the activities of the Global Studies Centre.
- Acknowledge receipt of the GUST Global Studies Travel Grant for Research in Kuwait in their acknowledgements in all theses/publications that include research funded by the GUST Global Studies Travel Grant for Research in Kuwait
- The 1000KWD will be transferred to the recipient once they arrive in person at GUST.
