GUST Global Studies Centre Research Grant in Middle Eastern Studies
SUMMARY
The purpose of the GUST Global Studies Centre (GSC) Grant in Middle Eastern Studies is to support significant Social Sciences and Humanities research in Middle Eastern Studies (broadly defined) for Ph.D candidates and early career researchers. One grant of up to $5000 USD will be awarded per academic year. Proposed research funded by the grant must be completed within a year of the awarding of the grant. Funding from this grant may be used for research travel and accommodation; research and research assistant fees; equipment and software; and other miscellaneous expenses as approved.
ELIGIBILTY
- Applicants are required to be a full time enrolled Ph.D candidate; or to be a full time post-doctoral fellow or faculty member at a recognized tertiary institution (university or college) who has been granted their Ph.D no more than eight years before the academic year of the grant
- Applicants must demonstrate the ability to complete the proposed research within a year of receiving the grant.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

- Detailed research proposal that includes the research question, methodology, timeline of proposed research, expected research output and outcomes and budget for the grant funds (no more than 5 pages).
- For Ph.D candidates, a confidential letter of support from their Ph.D supervisor explaining where the candidate is in terms of completing their Ph.D and their confidence in the applicant’s ability to complete the research project (to be sent separately).
SUBMISSION PROCESS:
Applications (except letters of support from Ph.D supervisors) should be submitted as one PDF file to GSCgrants2025@gust.edu.kw. Letters of support from Ph.D supervisors (where needed ) should be sent from their institutional addresses to GSCgrants2025@gust.edu.kw.
Deadline for submissions is February 15.
The grant recipient will be announced once selected and approved usually in April.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:
The grant applications will be considered and evaluated by a committee of Global Studies Centre members on the basis of:
- 1)The originality of the research.
- 2)The methodological considerations as outlined in the research proposal.
- 3)The feasibility of the research project as outlined in the research proposal.
- 4)The expected outcomes/research outputs as outlined in the research proposal.
- 5)The willingness of the applicant to collaborate and participate in the activities of the Global Studies Centre.
Final selection of the recipient of the GUST Global Studies Centre Research Grant in Middle Eastern Studies must be approved by the Chair of the Global Studies Centre, the Director of Graduate Studies and Research and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
Recipients of the GUST Global Studies Centre Research Grant in Middle Eastern Studies will be expected to::
- Give at least one research talk at the Global Studies Centre (either in person or online).
- Participate in the activities of the Global Studies Centre; and to possibly collaborate with Global Studies Centre members if feasible.
- Acknowledge receipt of the GUST Global Studies Centre Research Grant in Middle Eastern Studies in their acknowledgements in all theses/publications that include research funded by the GUST Global Studies Centre Research Grant in Middle Eastern Studies.
- Eligible expenses (not to exceed $5000 USD) will be reimbursed based on submitted receipts/invoices.
