GUST Hosts Claudia Al-Rashoud: Forty-Five Years of Photojournalism in Kuwait

Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud shared her experiences and insights during a talk titled “Life as a Photojournalist” at the Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.
The event began with a warm welcome and introduction of Claudia Al Rashoud by Dr. Thorsten Botz-Bornstein, a professor at GUST. Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud, a trailblazing photojournalist, has been capturing Kuwait’s history and heritage through her lens since 1979. At just 22 years old, she became the first professional female photojournalist at the Arab Times newspaper. Her powerful images have graced the pages of books, publications, and exhibitions, showcasing a country rich in heritage and traditions. Beyond photography, Claudia has authored five books on Kuwait and contributed to numerous publications, researching and documenting subjects often overlooked elsewhere.
In addition to her journalistic pursuits, Claudia serves as an Ethnographic Consultant for the nascent Scientific Center, where she works on preserving artifacts and depicting vanishing ways of life. She is also the co-founder of Touch of Hope Q8, the largest animal shelter in Kuwait, advocating for positive change through community outreach and education.
Moreover, GUST library manager J’Amy McCracken emphasized Claudia Al-Rashoud’s impactful work as a photojournalist, highlighting her dedication to capturing Kuwait’s history and heritage through her lens. Claudia’s commitment to storytelling through images continues to inspire and illuminate Kuwait’s past and present.
Library Manager J’Amy also informed that the GUST library already houses around 2,000 titles on Kuwait-related literature in both Arabic and English called ‘Kuwait Collection’. The library already held four of Claudia’s authored books on Kuwait, and she signed copy of her latest book during the event for GUST Library’s ‘Kuwait Collection’.
